The drug Fosamax (also known as Alendronate) is a prescription drug that the FDA approved to prevent and treat osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a serious condition that causes a weakening of the bone that makes it brittle and more prone to fractures and breaks. There is no known cure for osteoporosis.

Fosamax is marketed as the drug to prevent and slow down or stop osteoporosis’ bone loss and prevent fractures by strengthening the bone. However, the FDA has received such an increase in reports of femur fractures from women taking Fosamax that it became concerned. Female patients were suffering atypical femur fractures that occurred in the femur from just below the hip to above the knee. The FDA was concerned because it found that these very uncommon atypical fractures were common in women with long-term exposure to Fosamax. The FDA required Merck to strengthen Fosamax’s warnings to clearly state that it can cause atypical subtrochanteric femur fractures. In January, 2011 and February 2012, Fosamax’s warnings were strengthened to include a warning of these very unique femur fractures.

If you or a loved one took Fosamax and suffered a broken femur while on this drug or shortly after, you may be entitled to compensation for your injuries. The lawyers at Bailey & Galyen can help.
