When Should You File for Benefits?

You can file for benefits at any time, but unless your injury is serious and you can conclusively demonstrate that you will be unable to work for at least 12 months, you claim may be hard to prove. Though you want to start early, as most claims are initially denied and the process can take months or even years, you will want to have compelling evidence of the longevity of your condition before you file. An experienced attorney can provide sound advice on the best timing.

Where Do You File?

The application forms for SSD benefits are available on the Social Security Administration's Web site, as well as at a Social Security office. When you have completed the application, you can mail it or deliver it in person to the Social Security Administration.

What Do You Need to Provide?

When you submit your claim, you must also attach a disability report. The application itself requires that you submit a work history and a medical history. You must provide information about doctors whom you have visited regarding your disability, as well as medications you have taken, and any medical records relating to your disability. You may also be asked to submit to a medical examination by SSA-approved doctors, but the exam will be at no cost to you.
