The Types of Benefits You Can Recover under Social Security

The Social Security Act provides a broad range of benefits, providing compensation in a variety of circumstances. The benefits available include both Social Security disability insurance (SSDI) benefits and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) compensation. SSDI is based exclusively on work history and the type of disability. SSI benefits are need-based and can include compensation because of disability, age or blindness.

The specific types of benefits available are:

• disability insurance, paid under the SSDI program to people who have worked and paid Social Security taxes to qualify for benefits

• death benefits, paid to widows, widowers and surviving divorced spouses of individuals qualified to receive SSDI benefits
